Resilient Cities: Environmental Justice is Transportation Justice

Our movements are interdependent: as temperatures and sea levels rise, sustainable development and innovation in infrastructure are critical to support community resilience. This panel will explore transportation challenges and solutions to the climate crisis on a local scale – how city governments and communities are working together to become more resilient.

The Future of Enforcement: Data, Education, and Neighborhood Design

Serious crashes are preventable, and no one should be killed or seriously injured on our roads. That is the fundamental belief behind Vision Zero and a safe systems approach. Automated enforcement tools, real-time data, and street design strategies can be useful to improve safety, but require critical examination of their effects. As more tools become available to examine and respond to different facets of street activity, how do we ensure those tools don’t perpetuate bias? What supplementary measures are necessary to save lives while removing bias to the greatest extent possible?

Operationalizing Equity in Transportation Agencies

Centering equity in transportation must include reflecting on our own staffing and contracting practices so that our institutions reflect our diverse identities. Through data-driven analysis and strategic goal-setting around hiring, MWBE participation, and investment in workforce development, we can create opportunities for all communities and achieve better outcomes in service delivery.
